ગાંધીનગર, ૪ નવેમ્બર, ૨૦૨૬: રાજ્ય મંત્રીમંડળે અમરેલી જિલ્લાના શિયાળબેટ ટાપુ પર આધુનિક મત્સ્ય ઉતરાણ કેન્દ્ર વિકસાવવાના પ્રસ્તાવને સૈદ્ધાંતિક મંજૂરી આપી છે. ટાપુ પર ૧૫૪ બોટો, ૧,૧૦૦થી વધુ સક્રિય માછીમારો અને વર્ષે ૪,૬૧૧ ટન મત્સ્ય ઉત્પાદન છે. જમીનમાર્ગે જોડાણ ન હોવાથી અહીંના માછીમારો અન્ય બંદરોનો ઉપયોગ કરી શકતા નથી.
Gujarat's cabinet has given in-principle approval for a modern fish landing centre on Shiyal Bet, an island off the coast of Amreli district, meeting a long-standing demand of local fishermen, government spokesperson minister Jitu Vaghani said on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
Why the island needs it
- 154 boats, a population of about 2,680, more than 1,100 active fishermen, and 4,611 tonnes of fish landed.
- The island has no road link, so its fishermen cannot use other harbours and have to moor their boats around the island.
- Fishing is the islanders' only livelihood.
What will be built
A pile jetty, land reclamation, a stone bund, paver-block surfaces and electrical works. Handling, storage, auction, preservation and transport of fish will all be available in one place.
The government expects much less spoilage, easier transport of catch over long distances, and better income, safety and living standards for the island's fishermen, along with new jobs.
