અમદાવાદ, ૩ નવેમ્બર, ૨૦૨૬: કચ્છના શ્રમિક પરિવારની ૩ વર્ષની બાળકીને ભાઈ સાથે રમતાં છાતીમાં કાતર ઘૂસી ગઈ હતી. અમદાવાદ સિવિલ હોસ્પિટલના પીડિયાટ્રિક સર્જરી વિભાગે સર્જરી કરી કાતર સફળતાપૂર્વક બહાર કાઢી, અને બાળકી હવે સ્થિર છે. ડોક્ટરોના મતે કાતર એક ઇંચ પણ ખસી હોત તો શ્વાસનળી કે ફેફસાને ગંભીર ઈજા થઈ શકત.

Surgeons at the state-run Ahmedabad Civil Hospital have removed a pair of scissors lodged in the chest of a three-year-old girl, the daughter of a labourer couple from Kutch, the Health and Family Welfare Department said on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. She is stable and due to be discharged soon.

What happened

  • Around 11 am on October 29, while playing with her five-year-old brother, the scissors accidentally pierced her chest, a penetrating chest injury.
  • She was taken to a local private hospital, and then to a private hospital in Gandhidham, where a CT scan was done.
  • At about 10 pm the same day she was referred to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and taken straight into surgery.
  • Assistant professors Dr. Kashvi and Dr. Mrunalini led the operation with anaesthetists and other doctors, under Dr. Rakesh Joshi, professor and head of paediatric surgery.

How close it came

The doctors said that if the scissors had gone even an inch higher or to the side, they could have damaged her windpipe, or her lung and the space between two ribs, causing heavy bleeding. Because she is small, the force was low and the blades did not get past bone. Had they gone deeper, the major blood vessels and windpipe could have been seriously injured.

Advice for parents

Dr. Joshi urged parents to keep a close eye on what children play with: a five-year-old cannot know how much harm sharp objects can do. If a child suddenly has trouble breathing, get medical help straight away.

Last week the same department saved another child: a custard-apple seed removed from a 3-year-old's windpipe.
