અમદાવાદ, ૨૯ ઓક્ટોબર, ૨૦૨૬: અરવલ્લીના માલપુરની ૩ વર્ષની બાળકીની ડાબી મુખ્ય શ્વાસનળીમાં ફસાયેલું સીતાફળનું બીજ અમદાવાદ સિવિલ હોસ્પિટલના પીડિયાટ્રિક સર્જરી વિભાગે થેરાપ્યુટિક બ્રોન્કોસ્કોપીથી કાઢી તેનો જીવ બચાવ્યો. બાળકીની તબિયત સ્થિર છે. ડોક્ટરોએ વાલીઓને નાના બાળકોથી બીજ, સિક્કા અને રમકડાંના નાના ભાગ દૂર રાખવા અપીલ કરી છે.

Doctors at the state-run Ahmedabad Civil Hospital removed a custard-apple (sitafal) seed from the windpipe of a three-year-old girl from Malpur in Aravalli district, the Health and Family Welfare Department said on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The child is stable and was being discharged.

How it happened

  • While playing, the girl swallowed something and began coughing non-stop, struggling to breathe and vomiting.
  • Her family took her to a hospital in Modasa, which referred her to GMERS Hospital, Himmatnagar. There she was put on oxygen, and a CT scan showed a foreign body stuck in her left main bronchus.
  • She reached Ahmedabad Civil Hospital early on October 26, was stabilised and taken straight in for a therapeutic bronchoscopy, in which a thin scope is passed down the airway to pull the object out.
  • Dr. Rakesh Joshi, professor and head of paediatric surgery, carried out the procedure with anaesthesia assistant professor Dr. Sonal and their team.

Advice for parents

Dr. Joshi, who is also the hospital's superintendent, said small children often put coins, small toy parts, seeds or bits of food in their mouths while playing, and these can block the airway. His advice:

  • Keep small objects, including fruit seeds, out of young children's reach.
  • Watch children closely while they play and eat.
  • If a child suddenly starts coughing, has trouble breathing or seems to be choking, do not treat it as ordinary. Get medical help immediately. Prompt bronchoscopy can be life-saving.
