Overview and Mission
The Gujarati Samaj of Saskatchewan (GSSK) serves as the cultural and social cornerstone for the Gujarati-speaking community in Regina and throughout Saskatchewan. With the inspiring motto “social social and social culture” (Wherever Gujaratis reside, there resides Gujarat), this organization embodies the spirit of preserving and promoting Gujarati heritage while fostering community connections across Canada. [1]
Rich Historical Foundation
Early Settlement and Formation
The history of GSSK traces back to 1958, when the earliest Gujarati immigrants arrived in Saskatchewan. Initially, the community was small and intimate – prior to 1973, approximately a dozen Gujarati families celebrated traditional festivals in private residences. [2] [1]
Recognizing the growing need for formal community organization, the Samaj was formally established on February 23, 1974. The organization’s commitment to permanence and legitimacy was demonstrated through its incorporation under the Societies Act of the Province of Saskatchewan on September 26, 1977. Since January 1, 1987, GSSK has operated as a registered charitable and non-profit organization, emphasizing its dedication to community service and cultural preservation. [1] [2]
Cultural Connection to Gujarat
The organization represents Gujarati-speaking people whose cultural values originate from the Indian State of Gujarat. This state, which came into existence on May 1, 1960, encompasses approximately 178,000 square kilometers (about one-third the area of Saskatchewan) and currently has a population of over 60 million people. [2]
Current Organizational Structure
Membership and Growth
Today, GSSK boasts more than 1,000 families as registered members, representing significant growth from its humble beginnings with just a dozen families.
