History of Gujarati Samaj of Tri-State (GST)

Founded in 1998 with 12 board members and their spouses, GST has steadily grown as a hub for cultural, educational, and social activities in the South Jersey Tri-State area. Over the years, it has organized seminars, picnics, Anand Mela, Diwali celebrations, Garba during Sharad Purnima, and special stage programs featuring artists from India.

GST also provides platforms for youth and adults to showcase their talents in music, dance, and performance arts through talent shows, karaoke, and cultural events. Beyond entertainment, the Samaj actively supports the community through charity work, such as distributing food to the homeless.

The organization publishes Aabhushan, its annual magazine, featuring recipes, articles, travel tips, children’s writings, and local business promotions. With strong community participation—artists, vendors, seniors, professionals, and volunteers—GST continues to thrive as a vibrant cultural and social institution.

As a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization (Tax ID: 22-3572232), GST operates not for profit but for purpose. Its doors are open to all, irrespective of racial, ethnic, regional, religious, political, or socio-economic background, truly embodying the inclusive nature of its mission.

A Vibrant Calendar of Cultural Events

The lifeblood of GST is its diverse and dynamic roster of events, designed to celebrate traditions, showcase talent, and bring people together.

  • Signature Event: Anand Mela: The highlight of the GST calendar is the annual Anand Mela, typically held in late spring or early summer at Lenape High School. More than just a show, it’s a bustling fair complete with food, clothing, and jewelry vendors, creating a festive atmosphere for the entire family.
  • Annual Diwali Celebration: GST illuminates the tri-state area with its Annual Diwali Dinner & Musical Program. The 2024 event, scheduled for October 27th at the Indian Cultural Center (ICC) in Marlton, NJ, promises an evening of tradition, feasting, and a live concert by renowned artists Ameer Ali and Prachi Alekar.
  • Diverse Programming: Beyond these large gatherings, GST hosts a variety of events throughout the year:
    • Classical Performances: Dedicated 2.5-hour programs that showcase the depth and beauty of traditional Indian arts.
    • Talent Shows: Community-driven events held in spring and fall, providing a platform for local performers of all ages.
